Fred Set to Leave Manchester United Amid Interest from Fulham and Roma

Manchester United midfielder Fred will not be playing in Wednesday’s pre-season friendly against Leeds in Oslo, despite being fit and travelling to Norway with the rest of the squad. The 30-year-old Brazilian has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with Fulham and Serie A giants Roma both reportedly interested in signing him.

United have released a statement explaining that Fred’s absence from the match is purely precautionary, as he is managing his workload after returning for training at Carrington last week. His last match was six weeks ago, and he was not called up by Brazil for their summer friendlies.

With Fred out of the picture, manager Erik ten Hag selected youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Hannibal Mejbri to play in the heart of midfield, with new addition Mason Mount starting just ahead of them. Ten Hag has made it clear that he wants to strengthen the midfield department, and Mount’s arrival has pushed Fred further down the pecking order. United are also believed to be looking into signing Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat.

Fred has just one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, and United are reportedly demanding a fee in the region of £20million for him. Fulham are very keen to sign him, but that price point could prove to be a stumbling block. Roma boss Jose Mourinho is also a fan of Fred, but again the fee is an issue for the Italian side.

Speaking about his future at the end of last season, Fred said: “I’ll talk to my team, to the club and see what is everyone’s decision. I do have to talk with Ten Hag as well, he’s the manager and the conversation has to involve everyone. We have to see how next season will plan out. I want to be important, I want to help the team, so we’ll see. But I’ve always been and still am very happy at Manchester United. Of course, I always want to be playing, to be helping my team.”

It remains to be seen where Fred will end up this summer, but it looks increasingly likely that his time at Manchester United is coming to an end. Whether Fulham or Roma can meet United’s asking price remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – Fred will be looking for a new club before the start of the new season.
