Arsene Wenger’s True Sentiments on Van Persie’s Sale Revealed
In a recent revelation, former Manchester United chief executive David Gill has shed light on the level of upset Arsene Wenger felt about selling Robin van Persie in one of the most contentious transfers in Premier League history. Wenger, who had already lost key players like Cesc Fabregas, Kolo Toure, and Samir Nasri to rival clubs, was ill-prepared to part ways with his last remaining crown jewel in the summer of 2012.
At the time, Van Persie had one year left on his contract and had expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford, where he believed his ambitions would be met. Despite Wenger’s reluctance to sell, Arsenal eventually succumbed to the pressure, but only after Sir Alex Ferguson intervened and persuaded Wenger to do business.
Gill revealed that the decision to pursue Van Persie was driven by the need for more goals. “Going back to your point about Alex and players we would analyze where we’d fallen short that year (2012),” Gill explained. “It was the number of goals so we set out to get Mr. Van Persie and that was it so we went out got him that summer and lo and behold he went and scored 30-odd goals that won him the league.”
Dealing with Arsenal during the transfer negotiations wasn’t too difficult for Gill, as he primarily interacted with Ivan Gazidis and the player’s agent. However, Wenger clearly knew what he was losing and had a difficult relationship with Ferguson when they were adversaries. In the end, the deal was finalized with some adjustments made to give Arsenal a bit more.
Van Persie’s return to Manchester United was evident when he was welcomed back as a guest in the directors’ box during their convincing 3-0 home win over West Ham. The following day, he spent four hours at a restaurant with United manager Erik ten Hag and his agent Kees Vos.
In addition to his involvement with Manchester United, Van Persie is currently in charge of Feyenoord’s Under-18 side. However, he is also dedicating time to further his coaching career by completing a mandatory element of his UEFA Pro License at Carrington.
The revelation of Wenger’s true sentiments on Van Persie’s sale provides a deeper understanding of the emotions and complexities involved in one of the most significant transfers in Premier League history. It highlights the difficult decisions managers face when balancing the desires of players, the needs of the team, and the pressures of rival clubs.
