Jonathan Quick Shines as Rangers Show Confidence in Igor Shesterkin

The New York Rangers have found success in their recent three-game winning streak, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of goaltender Jonathan Quick. Quick, a three-time Stanley Cup winner, has been in net for all three victories and has consistently delivered strong play, boasting a save percentage of .920 or better in his last four starts. This marks a significant improvement from last season, where Quick struggled with a .882 save percentage while playing for the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights.

While Quick’s outstanding form has been a boon for the Rangers, it also highlights the recent inconsistency of their franchise goalie, Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin, who won the Vezina Trophy for his exceptional performance in the 2021-22 season, has struggled to reach that level in recent months. In January, he posted an abysmal save percentage of .863, ranking last among goalies who played at least five games during the month. He also saved 9.37 goals fewer than expected, the worst record in the league.

Despite Shesterkin’s recent struggles, his teammates, including Quick himself, remain confident in his abilities. Captain Jacob Trouba expressed his belief that Shesterkin will bounce back and labeled him as “the best in the world.” Quick also praised Shesterkin’s work ethic and stated that he learns a lot from watching him in practice.

Acknowledging the need to get Shesterkin back on track, Rangers coach Peter Laviolette made the decision to give him some time off during the All-Star break. Laviolette had previously attributed Shesterkin’s struggles to the team’s defensive performance but now recognizes the importance of allowing the goalie to focus on his game and regain his form. Shesterkin used this time to engage in additional video work and on-ice drills with renowned goalie coach Benoit Allaire.

Shesterkin, who backed up Quick in recent games against the Colorado Avalanche and the Tampa Bay Lightning, expressed his trust in the team and his belief that the time off was beneficial for him. Laviolette did not disclose whether Shesterkin would be back in net for the upcoming game against the Chicago Blackhawks but emphasized that he maintains constant communication with the goalie.

With Quick starting against the Lightning, the Rangers put together a strong defensive performance to counter the formidable Tampa Bay forward group. Quick made crucial saves throughout the game, including a stop on Nikita Kucherov early on and a pivotal save on Brandon Hagel during a late power play. The lone goal scored by Tampa Bay came from Hagel’s wrist shot that eluded Quick’s blocker.

Quick’s exceptional performance has solidified his status as a reliable goaltender for the Rangers. He currently boasts a .919 save percentage for the season and ranks in the top 15 in the NHL in goals saved above expected. Laviolette praised Quick’s contributions to the team and expressed gratitude for having a goalie of his caliber.

While Quick’s standout performances have been instrumental in the Rangers’ recent success, the team remains confident in Shesterkin’s abilities. Despite his recent struggles, Shesterkin maintains his readiness and confidence, stating that he feels great and is prepared for whatever comes his way.

As the Rangers continue their push for success, their confidence in both Quick and Shesterkin serves as a testament to their strength in goal. With two talented goaltenders at their disposal, the Rangers are well-positioned to make a strong playoff push and reach the heights they aim for.
