Surprising Evaluation Error: Former Transfer Chief’s Cost Concerns Proven Wrong on Szoboszlai
Liverpool’s former sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, has been left delighted after being proven wrong about the cost of signing Dominik Szoboszlai. Initially, Schmadtke believed that the deal for the talented midfielder was “too expensive.” However, Liverpool went ahead and signed Szoboszlai from Leipzig for a fee of around £60 million, taking advantage of his release clause.
Since his arrival at Anfield, Szoboszlai has made an instant impact, quickly becoming a fan favorite. Although he has faced some setbacks due to injury, the 23-year-old has shown incredible potential. Liverpool secured an excellent deal by acquiring him as an alternative to Mason Mount.
Schmadtke admitted his initial misjudgment, saying, “In Liverpool, there was someone who cost €70 million, Dominik Szoboszlai, who we brought from Leipzig… Then I said: ‘It’s too expensive.’ From today’s perspective, that was a misjudgment on my part.”
Szoboszlai has made 33 appearances in his debut season so far, scoring seven goals and providing four assists. Despite missing 10 games in a run of 12 due to injury, he has played the eighth-most minutes of any player in the Liverpool squad this season (2,220 minutes).
The Hungary captain’s presence in midfield is sometimes underappreciated, but his fresh and energetic legs have helped transform Liverpool’s midfield. He is a confident and assured player who has settled well at Anfield. Szoboszlai will play a crucial role in Liverpool’s pursuit of both the Premier League and Europa League titles.
As for Schmadtke, who left his position as sporting director at the end of the January transfer window, he is currently without a job. However, he is attracting interest from 2.Bundesliga’s Hamburger SV.
It is clear that Schmadtke’s concerns about the cost of signing Szoboszlai have been proven wrong. Liverpool made a shrewd move by securing the talented midfielder, who has quickly become an important player for the team. Szoboszlai’s impact on the pitch and his potential for further growth make him a valuable asset for Liverpool’s title ambitions.
