Robinho, Former Brazil Star, Faces Nine-Year Rape Sentence
Former Manchester City and Real Madrid forward, Robinho, has been instructed to serve a nine-year prison sentence for his involvement in a gang rape case. The court ruling, which took place in his home country of Brazil, comes after an Italian court found him guilty in 2017. The incident in question occurred in 2013, where Robinho was found to have participated in the rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman.
Living in Brazil, Robinho has been protected from extradition due to the country’s policy of not extraditing its nationals. However, the recent decision by judges in Brasilia now requires him to serve his sentence in Brazil. While he awaits a possible appeal against the ruling, he will remain free, according to his lawyers.
Robinho, who has represented Brazil 100 times, was playing for AC Milan at the time of the crime. Following his initial conviction in 2017, he lost an appeal in 2020, and the highest court in Italy upheld his sentence in 2022. Consequently, Italian prosecutors issued an international arrest warrant for him.
In a recent interview with a Brazilian network, Robinho claimed that the sexual encounter was consensual. However, this assertion was not accepted by the Italian courts during the trial and subsequent appeals.
Robinho’s football career has seen him achieve success at top European clubs. He won two La Liga titles during his four seasons with Real Madrid before making a high-profile move to Manchester City in September 2008. The transfer fee of £32.5 million was a British record at the time and coincided with Sheikh Mansour’s first day as owner of the Premier League club. After spending two seasons with Manchester City, Robinho joined AC Milan, where he played for five years. He later had stints in China with Guangzhou Evergrande before returning to Brazil to play for Atletico Mineiro.
The recent ruling has had significant implications for Robinho’s personal life and reputation. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing serious allegations and ensuring justice is served, regardless of a person’s fame or status. As the legal process unfolds, Robinho’s future remains uncertain, and it is yet to be seen how this situation will impact his legacy in the world of football.
