Robinho, Former Man City Star, Faces Nine-Year Prison Sentence for Rape in Brazil
Former Manchester City footballer Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a Brazilian high court following his conviction for rape in Italy in 2017. The Brazilian international, who played for Man City from 2008 to 2010, was found guilty along with five others of sexually assaulting a woman in a Milan nightclub in 2013. Despite losing two appeals to overturn his conviction, Robinho continues to deny any wrongdoing.
Until now, it seemed unlikely that the 40-year-old would serve his sentence as he is based in Brazil and the country does not extradite its citizens. However, on Wednesday, judges on Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice voted 9-2 to validate the conviction, meaning that Robinho will now serve his sentence in his homeland. The decision came after a court in Milan confirmed the validity of the conviction.
Robinho can still appeal the decision to Brazil’s Supreme Court, and his lawyers have suggested that he will seek to do so. If his appeal is unsuccessful, he will be required to serve the full nine-year prison term.
Robinho’s career in British football began when he moved from Real Madrid to Manchester City in 2008 for a record-breaking fee of £32.5 million. However, he struggled to make an impact in the Premier League and was sold to AC Milan just two years later. It was during his time with the Serie A giants that the offense took place.
This recent ruling has brought renewed attention to Robinho’s controversial past. Despite his talent on the football field, he has been involved in several off-field incidents throughout his career. It remains to be seen how this latest development will impact his reputation and future prospects.
