Joe Gomez Overcomes ‘Psychological Toll’ as Liverpool and England Defender

Liverpool and England defender Joe Gomez has opened up about the “psychological toll” he experienced after suffering a season-ending knee injury while on international duty with the Three Lions in November 2020. However, Gomez says that linking back up with the England squad has helped him close that chapter and move forward.

Gomez, who underwent surgery on his left knee tendon following the injury, is now back in contention for Gareth Southgate’s team and could feature for England for the first time since October 2020 when they take on Brazil in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Reflecting on the events back then, Gomez admitted that the injury had a psychological impact on him. Leaving the training pitch in an ambulance and not getting a chance to come back was tough to deal with. However, he expressed his gratitude for being able to return to the squad and close that chapter.

Now 26 years old, Gomez highlighted how being away from the game for so long had given him a different outlook and perspective. He also acknowledged that he owes a lot to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has been the biggest influence in his career.

Despite his personal journey, Gomez remains focused on the present rather than looking too far ahead. He is determined to contribute to Liverpool’s success this season, as they are currently level on points with Premier League leaders Arsenal with 10 matches to go. The Reds are also still in contention for the Europa League title, with a quarter-final match against Atalanta coming up.

When asked about his chances of making the England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany, Gomez stated that he is not thinking that far ahead. He believes that there is still a lot to play for both at the club level and with the national team.

Liverpool recently suffered a quarter-final defeat in the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United. However, Gomez and his teammates are determined to finish the season well before Klopp’s departure as manager. They appreciate the influence Klopp has had on their careers and want to do well under his guidance.

In conclusion, Joe Gomez has overcome the “psychological toll” of his knee injury and is now back in contention for England. His return to the squad has allowed him to close that chapter and focus on the present. He remains grateful for the support of Jurgen Klopp and is determined to contribute to Liverpool’s success this season. As for his chances of making the England squad for Euro 2024, Gomez is not looking too far ahead and is focused on what lies ahead both at the club level and with the national team.
