Arsenal reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Wolves. Despite their recent European heartbreak, the Gunners managed to secure a crucial win, giving them a one-point lead over their rivals, although those teams have a game in hand.
Leandro Trossard was the star of the show, scoring a stunning first-half goal to open the scoring for Arsenal. The Belgian has consistently come up with important goals for his team. Captain Martin Odegaard sealed the victory with a goal in injury time, adding a cherry on top of the three points.
Although it wasn’t a vintage performance from Mikel Arteta’s men, it was a professional display that got them over the line. This result keeps Arsenal in contention for something special come May.
In terms of individual performances, goalkeeper David Raya had very little to do in the opening 30 minutes but made a stunning reaction save onto the post, ultimately proving to be a match-winning save. Jakub Kiwior was forward a lot but lacked accuracy in his delivery. He almost handed Wolves the lead after losing a duel but was saved by Raya.
William Saliba’s usually immaculate displays showed cracks, with a few missteps here and there. However, he made up for it with his physicality and recovery speed. Gabriel Magalhaes, on the other hand, is in great form and has become a real vocal leader at the back, constantly gesturing to calm down and play through pressure.
Bukayo Saka had a quiet night, wasting a glorious chance in the first half. Kai Havertz was arguably Arsenal’s best player in the first half, displaying aggression and determination, but like most of his teammates, lacked a clinical edge.
Martin Odegaard didn’t have his best game in terms of pressing and high-energy performance. He looked tired and dithered over a good chance in the box. However, he wrapped up the points with an ingenious finish from a tight angle in the dying seconds.
Leandro Trossard had the freedom to roam and got stuck in but missed a chance before making up for it with an unusual and somewhat fluky top corner finish just before half-time. Gabriel Jesus was passive in attack but sparked a goal out of the blue with some neat hold-up play.
In terms of substitutes, Gabriel Martinelli was brought on to provide energy and strength down the left but still looks like a shadow of the player who impressed last season. He selfishly took a shot instead of passing to Saka for a simple tap-in. Thomas Partey continued to return to full fitness and provided some grit in midfield in the closing stages.
Overall, Arsenal’s victory over Wolves was a professional performance that kept them in the race for the Premier League title. While some players had off nights, others stepped up and delivered important contributions. With their rivals holding a game in hand, the Gunners will need to maintain this level of performance to have a chance at something special come May.
