Ravens Prepare for 2024 NFL Draft
The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up for the 2024 NFL Draft, where they hold the 30th pick in the first round. This year’s draft will take place in Detroit, with Round 1 kicking off on April 25. The Ravens have a total of nine picks in the seven-round draft, providing them with ample opportunities to address their roster needs.
The Ravens faced significant challenges this offseason due to their limited salary-cap space and the departure of more than 20 free agents. This has left them with several holes on their roster, particularly at key positions such as offensive lineman, edge rusher, cornerback, wide receiver, and safety.
On the offensive line, the Ravens currently have three vacancies, making it crucial for them to prioritize this position in the draft. While they do have potential options like Daniel Faalele and Patrick Mekari, adding depth and talent to the line will be essential for the team’s success.
At the edge rusher position, the Ravens are in need of an established double-digit sack player. With the departure of Jadeveon Clowney and uncertainty surrounding other veterans, finding a pass rusher who can consistently get to the quarterback will be a priority for the team.
Cornerback is another area of concern for the Ravens. Marlon Humphrey is coming off a disappointing season, and there is a lack of depth behind him. Adding more talent and competition at cornerback will help solidify the defense.
The wide receiver position is an area where the Ravens could benefit from adding depth. While they have talked about the development of Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, the depth chart is thin beyond them. Given the strength of this year’s receiver class, it would be wise for the Ravens to take advantage of the opportunity to add to their receiving corps.
Lastly, safety is a position that needs attention for the Ravens. While they have a solid starting duo in Marcus Williams and Kyle Hamilton, they lack a reliable third safety. Addressing this need will provide depth and insurance in case of injuries.
In Dane Brugler’s seven-round mock draft, he has the Ravens addressing many of their team needs. He suggests focusing on the offensive line early and then adding secondary help in later rounds. Other mock drafts have connected the Ravens to players like Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton, and BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia.
Looking back at the Ravens’ recent top draft picks, they have had mixed success. Zay Flowers, their 2023 first-round wide receiver, had an impressive rookie season but will need to bounce back from a costly fumble in the AFC championship. Kyle Hamilton, their 2022 first-round safety, has quickly established himself as one of the best in the league. Tyler Linderbaum, their 2022 first-round center, is also considered one of the best players at his position.
In 2021, the Ravens drafted wide receiver Rashod Bateman and edge rusher Odafe Oweh in the first round. Bateman struggled to find consistency with Lamar Jackson, but the team is hopeful for a breakout season in 2024. Oweh showed improvement in his second season and is expected to continue developing as an impact player.
As the Ravens prepare for the upcoming draft, they have the opportunity to address their roster needs and add talent to their team. With multiple picks in each round, they have the flexibility to make strategic moves and secure players who can contribute immediately. The success of their draft picks will play a significant role in shaping their roster for the upcoming season.
