Aleksander Ceferin: UEFA ‘Knew We Were Right’ about Manchester City’s Alleged Financial Fair Play Breaches
Aleksander Ceferin, the president of UEFA, has reiterated that the organization was confident in their decision regarding Manchester City’s alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play regulations.
The Champions League Ban
In January 2020, Manchester City was banned from participating in the Champions League for two seasons and fined £25m after being found guilty of seriously misleading UEFA and breaking Financial Fair Play rules.
The Overturned Ban
However, seven months later, the Court of Arbitration overturned the ban and reduced the fine to £10m.
Domestic Charges
Despite the overturned ban, Manchester City still faced charges on domestic grounds. In February 2023, the Premier League found 115 breaches spanning over nine seasons.
City’s Trial
A trial date has been set for Manchester City, although it has not yet been disclosed.

Aleksander Ceferin believes that a guilty verdict on the domestic charges would validate UEFA’s position and prove that they were right about Manchester City’s Champions League ban.
‘We know we were right,’ Ceferin stated confidently. ‘We wouldn’t have made the decision if we didn’t believe we were right. As a trial lawyer for 25 years, I understand that sometimes you win a case you thought you would lose, and sometimes you lose a case you were sure about. We must respect the decision of the court in a serious democracy.’
He refrained from commenting specifically on the ongoing case in England but expressed his trust in the correctness of UEFA’s independent body’s decision.
