Messi is now playing his football at Inter Miami in MLS, having left Barcelona in 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain due to the club’s financial troubles. He said the situation still bothers him and he would like to return to the club where he made his name to put things right.
‘There was a bitter taste when I left and I don’t like that,’ he said. ‘I’d like to change the way the story ended. I deserve to say goodbye to the people that gave me so much joy. If it happens I’ll be very happy to be there of course.’

On accepting his record-extending eighth Ballon D’Or, Messi hailed Barcelona as the greatest club in the world and the team at its peak as the best side the game has seen.
‘I was lucky to be in the best team in the world, the best club. The best team in history. That made it easier to win individual titles,’ he said. ‘I said the other day that Argentina was close to that team and they misunderstood me. Nobody doubts that Barxa was the best in history and it will be almost impossible to see something similar.’
Messi is now three clear of Cristiano Ronaldo for Ballon D’Or wins, with the Portuguese superstar on five, followed by Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten who have won the award three times.
