LFC Enlists 17-Year-Old Centre-Back for Europa League Squad
Liverpool’s Europa League journey continues as they prepare for their second-leg match against Sparta Prague at Anfield. With the club just 90 minutes away from securing their place in another European quarter-final, Jurgen Klopp is expected to field a strong, yet rotated side for the upcoming fixture.
In an interesting development, UEFA has confirmed that 17-year-old centre-back Carter Pinnington has been added to Liverpool’s Europa League squad via list B. According to the rules, clubs can register an unlimited number of players aged 21 or under outside of their initial Europa League squad (list A), as long as they have been with the club for two or more years. However, despite training with the first-team, youngsters Trey Nyoni, 16, and Amara Nallo, 17, cannot be included since they have not fulfilled the necessary requirement.
Pinnington, who has been on Liverpool’s books since under-7s level, was not involved in first-team training throughout the week. However, due to the absence of Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip, the team’s only senior centre-back options are Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah. In light of this situation, Pinnington has been included in the squad as emergency cover should the need arise prior to kick-off.
Although it is unlikely that Pinnington will be named in the matchday squad against Sparta Prague, Klopp has the option to select 12 substitutes, so anything is possible. Pinnington’s inclusion showcases the faith the club has in their academy players and their commitment to developing young talent.
Pinnington is a versatile player who can also occupy the No. 6 role, offering a commanding presence at the back. He currently plays as a first-choice starter for the U21s, highlighting his level of maturity and skill. Barry Lewtas, who coaches the U21s, has partnered Pinnington with Nallo at centre-back due to their impressive abilities.
As Liverpool look to progress in the Europa League, Pinnington’s inclusion adds depth to their defensive options. While he may not feature prominently in this campaign, the experience gained from being a part of the squad will undoubtedly aid his development. The club’s investment in their youth system is paying off, as talented players like Pinnington continue to emerge and make their mark. With a bright future ahead, it’s only a matter of time before we see these young stars shine on the big stage.
