Former Tottenham Star Reveals Passionate Support for Arsenal to Win the League
Former Tottenham Hotspur player Darren Bent has caused quite a stir by admitting that he would rather see Arsenal win the Premier League than England triumph at Euro 2024. Despite playing for Tottenham between 2007 and 2009, Bent has revealed himself to be a staunch Gooner and prioritizes his love for Arsenal over his national team.
During a recent appearance on talkSPORT, Bent was asked by co-host Andy Goldstein whether he would prefer Arsenal to win the Premier League or England to win Euro 2024. In response, Bent emphatically stated, “As an Arsenal fan, I want the league. I want Arsenal over anything.” This statement left Goldstein flabbergasted, who then proposed the idea of Arsenal winning the FA Cup or England winning the Euros. Bent admitted it was a close call but ultimately leaned towards the Euros, although he did emphasize that the Champions League and Premier League were his top priorities.
Even more surprising was Bent’s revelation that he would choose a domestic cup double for Arsenal over England winning the Euros. He stated, “FA Cup and League Cup. Nope, I’m not joking you. FA Cup, League Cup. Arsenal.” This declaration led Goldstein to call Bent’s opinion “nuts.” However, Bent remained firm in his stance, stating that as a fan, he prioritizes his club over his country.
Bent’s allegiance to Arsenal is evident not only in his recent comments but also in his past actions. Before the North London derby in September, he selected 11 Arsenal players in a combined XI, leaving out Tottenham’s Son Heung-min in favor of Gabriel Jesus. Unfortunately for Bent, Son went on to score twice in the 2-2 draw, proving that he was wrong to underestimate the South Korean’s abilities.
Darren Bent had a successful career in English football, playing 79 times for Tottenham and scoring 25 goals, while also providing seven assists. However, he fell down the pecking order at White Hart Lane and eventually moved to Sunderland in 2009. Although he earned 12 caps for the England national team, scoring four goals, he never received a call-up for a major tournament.
Bent’s passionate support for Arsenal over his former club and country may come as a surprise to some. However, it is a testament to the strong emotional connection that fans have with their favorite teams. While some may find his opinion unusual, Bent’s unwavering loyalty to Arsenal is a reminder of the deep-rooted passion that drives football fans around the world.
