David Raya Reveals Financial Fair Play Issues Prevented Permanent Arsenal Deal
David Raya, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, has disclosed that “issues” with Financial Fair Play regulations were the reason why Arsenal couldn’t sign him permanently in the summer. He also claims that Arsenal beat out competition from Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich for his signature.
Loan Deal with Option to Buy
Arsenal secured Raya on loan from Brentford for a fee of £3 million in August. However, they have the option to make the deal permanent for £27 million at the end of the season.
Unconvincing Performances
Raya has become Mikel Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeper, displacing Aaron Ramsdale. However, he has faced criticism for his unconvincing performances since joining Arsenal.
Arsenal’s Longstanding Interest
Raya’s agent, Jaume Munell, reveals that Arsenal’s interest in the Spaniard predates their decision to sign Ramsdale in 2021. He also mentions that Tottenham, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Manchester United all made concrete approaches for Raya during the summer transfer window.
Financial Fair Play Issues
Munell explains that Arsenal’s interest in Raya was always a priority, but Financial Fair Play issues prevented them from making a permanent transfer. He praises Arsenal’s quality, young players, and the coaching staff as key factors in Raya’s decision to join the club.
