Marseille left-back Nuno Tavares has been hailed as a potential star by his boss, who believes he could play for Real Madrid, Barcelona, or Manchester City. Tavares, 23, joined Arsenal from Benfica for £8 million in 2021 but struggled for consistency and form in his first season at the Emirates. He was subsequently loaned out to Marseille last summer and has since scored six goals in 32 matches, helping the French side reach second place in Ligue 1.
Marseille boss Igor Tudor praised Tavares’ physical capabilities and outstanding ability to run, stating that he is a world-class star capable of playing for any top side. However, Tudor also acknowledged that Tavares still needs to grow and progress, adding that they talk to him a lot.
If Tavares returns to Arsenal and challenges for a first-team place next season, it could bring Kieran Tierney’s future into question. The Scottish left-back has endured another injury-plagued campaign and has been linked with a move to Newcastle.
Tavares is not the only Arsenal loanee shining this season, with England U21 forward Folarin Balogun setting Reims alight with 18 goals in all competitions. Balogun is open to waiting for his chance by taking in a second spell in France, stating that contractually he has to go back because the loan was only for one year. However, he added that a lot could happen in football and that he doesn’t know what the future will bring.
