Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has recently criticized the performance of Mason Mount, who moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea in the summer for a staggering £55 million. Yorke believes that Mount is “not that good of a player” and has failed to impress since joining the Manchester outfit.
Mount, who is currently 25 years old, has been struggling with a calf problem and has not played for Man United since their 1-0 win over Luton Town in November. Although he has been making progress in his recovery, it remains uncertain when he will be fit enough to make his return.
This situation has raised concerns for Erik ten Hag’s side, as they spent a significant amount of money on Mount. However, the Dutchman may have to consider other options, such as Mount’s former teammate Conor Gallagher. Gallagher’s contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in June 2025, and he is unlikely to renew it. This makes him a potential transfer target for Manchester United.
Yorke, however, does not believe that Gallagher is an improvement over Mount or the current players at Old Trafford. He stated, “The question is whether Gallagher improves United, and I don’t think he does. You can’t buy players who aren’t better than the ones we already have.” Yorke further expressed doubt about Mount’s abilities, claiming that he is also not as good as people think.
So far this season, Mount has only played 12 games in all competitions and has yet to score a goal for his new team. His playing time has been limited due to a pubis injury that kept him out of Chelsea’s last 18 matches of the 2022-23 campaign. Over the past year, Mount has started in only nine games, completing the full 90 minutes just once.
The situation surrounding Mount’s performance and fitness raises questions about whether he was worth the £55 million investment by Manchester United. With Yorke’s criticism and doubts about his abilities, it remains to be seen how Mount will respond and whether he can prove his worth in the coming matches. As for Gallagher, his potential move to Old Trafford may be uncertain, as Yorke believes that he is not an improvement over the current squad members. Manchester United will need to carefully consider their options and make strategic decisions to strengthen their midfield lineup.
