Watford Working Hard to Secure New Striker Before Transfer Window Closes
Watford manager Valerien Ismael has revealed that the club is actively working behind the scenes to sign a new striker before the end of the transfer window. Ismael expressed his desire to strengthen the team’s attacking options after Watford’s goalless draw against Plymouth Argyle.
“We know what we have to do. I think everyone can see so it’s not a secret,” Ismael said. “We are working behind the scenes to get the solution and hopefully we can get our number one target that we’re looking for.”
While no specific names were mentioned, it has been reported that Watford has held exploratory talks with FC Midtjylland regarding striker Sory Kaba. However, no agreement has been reached at this stage. The club is also keeping an eye on Shamar Nicholson, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow. The 26-year-old Jamaican international has an impressive record, scoring 30 goals in 76 league appearances for Charleroi in Belgium before joining Spartak Moscow in December 2021.
Ismael emphasized that Watford is considering other options as well, indicating their determination to find the right striker to bolster their squad.
In their recent match against Plymouth, Vakoun Bayo led the line for Watford. The 26-year-old Ivorian forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Charleroi, has already scored two goals this season. Bayo had Watford’s best chance of the second half but missed when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
When asked about Bayo’s disappointment after missing the chance, Ismael stated, “We don’t say, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ I think that the player knows that as well. A number nine gets his money to score goals.” Ismael acknowledged Bayo’s efforts but stressed the importance of having more depth in the striker position.
While Ismael is content with Bayo as an option, he believes that additional support is necessary. Rhys Healey and academy graduate Tobi Adeyemo currently provide backup, but Ismael would like to have more options available.
“I know that Bayo now is really disappointed… but it’s important that he creates chances,” Ismael added. “So when you create the chances, it’s a good point.” The manager also shared the advice he will give his striker, encouraging him to keep going, believe in himself, and assuring him that the team believes in him. However, Ismael emphasized the need for support for Bayo.
“He worked hard for the team, tried everything and was tired at the end. (It’s) another 90 minutes for him, which will help him to get that fitness. I think as soon as he (finds) the rhythm, then the 1-v-1 situations, he can make a better decision.”
Watford’s pursuit of a new striker reflects their ambition to strengthen their squad and improve their attacking options. Ismael’s determination to find the right player before the transfer window closes highlights the club’s commitment to achieving their goals this season.
As the deadline approaches, Watford fans eagerly await news of a new signing that will provide the team with the necessary firepower to compete at the highest level.
