Tom Lockyer, the captain of Luton, recently revealed that he experienced warning signs of lightheadedness in two Premier League games before his cardiac arrest. Lockyer, who had previously suffered an atrial fibrillation episode, had a heart device fitted in the weeks leading up to his collapse at the abandoned match against Bournemouth on December 16. The device, known as a loop recorder, constantly monitored his heart activity but did not show any abnormalities despite Lockyer’s lightheadedness.
Lockyer expressed his gratitude towards the medical professionals who saved his life, including Luton’s club doctor, physios, and paramedics, as well as Bournemouth’s staff. He plans to personally thank each of them when the match is replayed. Lockyer also watched the incident back and described the disorienting feeling he experienced when he collapsed.
The footballer underwent surgery to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted following his second collapse. However, his future in professional football remains uncertain. Lockyer acknowledged the complexity of heart conditions, stating that it is too early to determine if he will be able to return to the sport. He emphasized that he will follow the advice of specialists but still holds onto the dream of playing again.
While unable to train currently, Lockyer has found fulfillment in becoming a father to a baby girl. He admitted that not being able to exercise has been challenging but mentioned that he has been playing golf and riding an electric bike within the limits set by his doctors. He emphasized that having a family has given him a new perspective on life and has changed his priorities.
Lockyer’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing warning signs and seeking medical attention. His experience highlights the dedication and skill of the medical professionals who work tirelessly to save lives on and off the field. Lockyer’s determination to thank those who helped him demonstrates the impact that their actions had on him and his gratitude for their efforts. As he continues his recovery journey, Lockyer remains hopeful that he will be able to return to the sport he loves, but acknowledges that his health must come first.
