Walter Davis, University of North Carolina basketball legend and Olympic gold medalist, passed away at the age of 69 due to natural causes. Davis, who was also the uncle of current UNC coach Hubert Davis, had an illustrious career both in college and the NBA.

Davis was a standout player for the Tar Heels, earning All-ACC honors in 1976 and 1977. He played a pivotal role in leading the team to an ACC tournament win and a spot in the NCAA championship game. Throughout his college career, Davis scored an impressive 1,863 points, grabbed 670 rebounds, and dished out 409 assists under the guidance of legendary coach Dean Smith.

In addition to his college success, Davis was also a key member of the U.S. men’s basketball team that won gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Coached by Dean Smith, Davis showcased his skills on the international stage and contributed to the team’s success.

Following his college career, Davis was selected by the Phoenix Suns as the fifth overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft. He wasted no time making an impact in the league, earning the Rookie of the Year award in the 1977-78 season. Over his 15-year NBA career, Davis became a six-time All-Star, representing both the Suns and later the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers. He was known for his scoring ability, averaging 18.9 points on an impressive 51.1 percent shooting, along with 3.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

Davis’ contributions to the Suns were so significant that his No. 6 jersey was retired by the team in 1994. He remains the all-time leading scorer in Suns history. His achievements on the court also earned him a place in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Off the court, Davis was known for his humility and sportsmanship. He was respected by teammates, opponents, and fans alike for his professionalism and dedication to the game. Davis’ impact on the basketball community extended beyond his playing days, as he continued to inspire and mentor young athletes throughout his life.

The basketball world mourns the loss of Walter Davis, a true legend of the game. His contributions to the sport, both at the college and professional levels, will forever be remembered. As fans and fellow athletes reflect on his career, they will undoubtedly celebrate his achievements and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

In conclusion, Walter Davis was a basketball icon who left an indelible mark on the sport. From his college success with the Tar Heels to his stellar NBA career, Davis showcased his talent and passion for the game. His achievements on the court, including an Olympic gold medal and multiple All-Star selections, solidify his status as one of the greatest players of his era. While his passing is a great loss to the basketball community, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes. Walter Davis will forever be remembered as a true legend of the game.
