Vinicius Junior Stands in Solidarity with Mike Maignan Against Racial Abuse
Vinicius Junior, the Real Madrid forward, has expressed his support for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan after he was racially abused during a Serie A game against Udinese. Maignan and his teammates walked off the pitch in protest after being subjected to monkey chants from the home fans. The game was temporarily halted, but Milan eventually returned and secured a 3-2 comeback victory.
In response to the incident, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has proposed that teams whose fans engage in racist chanting should automatically forfeit the game. Vinicius, who has also experienced racial abuse in La Liga, shared his solidarity with Maignan and called for stricter consequences for racists. He stated that those found guilty should be imprisoned to feel ashamed of their actions.
Maignan himself has taken to social media to address the issue. He emphasized that it was not just an attack on him as a player but as a person and a father. He expressed frustration at the lack of progress despite previous efforts such as press releases, advertising campaigns, and protocols.
The fight against racism in football is challenging but one that Maignan believes can be won with time and courage. He thanked AC Milan, his teammates, the referee, the Udinese players, and everyone who showed support through messages and calls.
