Los Angeles Chargers Uncertain About Justin Herbert’s Availability After Finger Injury
The Los Angeles Chargers are unsure if their star quarterback, Justin Herbert, will be able to play in Thursday night’s game. Herbert fractured his right index finger during Sunday’s disappointing 24-7 loss to the Denver Broncos. Coach Brandon Staley expressed uncertainty about Herbert’s status during a press conference on Monday.
Concern for Herbert’s Long-Term Health
Staley emphasized that the team’s priority is Justin Herbert’s long-term well-being. He stated, “We’re going to make sure that whatever it is, we’re going to do what’s best for Justin long term. He’s as tough as they come, but we need to consider his future.”

Herbert is scheduled to consult with two specialists on Monday to determine the most suitable treatment for his injured finger. Staley assured that any decisions regarding Herbert’s availability will be made with his future in mind. “His right hand and his long-term future are of utmost importance. At only 25 years old, he has a bright future ahead, and we will prioritize his well-being in every decision we make,” Staley added.
Injury Details and Potential Surgery
The incident occurred late in the first half when Herbert completed a pass to tight end Donald Parham. Broncos defensive lineman Zach Allen hit Herbert, causing him to clutch his right hand in pain. After the drive, Herbert immediately went to the locker room. Easton Stick took over as quarterback for the Chargers in Herbert’s absence.
Following the game, Herbert wore a splint and mentioned that he anticipated further testing to determine the next steps for his treatment. He did not rule out the possibility of surgery.
Herbert’s Performance and Backup Quarterback
Prior to leaving the game, Herbert completed 9 of 17 passes for 96 yards with one interception. Stick, who is expected to fill in if Herbert is unable to play for an extended period, completed 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards, resulting in a passer rating of 78.3.
