UEFA have selected one of their finest referees, Szymon Marciniak, to take charge of the Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan this evening. Marciniak began his career as a professional referee in 2006 and has been FIFA listed since 2011. He has refereed multiple Champions League fixtures since then, establishing himself as one of the very finest referees in the game. This season, Marciniak has taken charge of eight Champions League games, including Manchester City’s semi-final second leg with Real Madrid. He also became the first Polish referee to officiate a World Cup final when he took charge of Argentina vs France back in December. Despite receiving widespread praise for his expert handling of the big game, Marciniak was slightly critical of himself after the final whistle. Previously, Marciniak was forced to sit out of Euro 2020 after being diagnosed with tachycardia, a condition which involves the heart beating abnormally fast. He has also refereed two group stage games at the World Cup in Russia four years ago, whilst he also officiated two group fixtures and one Round of 16 matches at Euro 2016.
