Sturridge Criticizes Pochettino’s Substitutions in Draw Against Man City
In a thrilling 1-1 draw between Manchester City and Chelsea, Daniel Sturridge criticized Mauricio Pochettino for his tactical decisions in the closing stages of the match. Despite Raheem Sterling giving Chelsea the lead, Rodri rescued a point late on for City at the Etihad. Sturridge believes that Pochettino made a big mistake by substituting Sterling and Cole Palmer off, ultimately changing the dynamics of the game.
Counter-Attacking Success
Throughout the match, Chelsea took advantage of their counter-attacking style and constantly created problems for the home side. The visitors were comfortable with City enjoying much of the possession as they looked to exploit their opponents on the break. Sturridge commended Chelsea’s tactics, stating, “See for me, things are going nice, counter attacks, chops and changes, combinations, all these types of things…”
Questionable Substitutions
However, Pochettino’s substitutions in the final 20 minutes of the game raised eyebrows. He first replaced Palmer with centre-back Trevoh Chalobah and then took off Sterling for Christopher Nkunku. Finally, he substituted forward Nicolas Jackson for midfielder Cesare Casadei just moments before Rodri scored the equalizer. Sturridge expressed his disagreement with these decisions, believing that Chelsea should have stuck with their counter-attacking strategy.
Misjudgment or Tactical Necessity?
Pochettino defended his choice to bring on another defender, explaining that he wanted to try and score a second goal while not giving too much space to Chelsea. He said, “It was difficult because we were not able to score the second goal and they got the goal and the draw.” Despite the draw, Pochettino expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance and praised their bravery and fighting spirit against a tough opponent.
Looking Ahead
The draw between Manchester City and Chelsea was a thrilling encounter that showcased the strengths and weaknesses of both teams. While Sturridge criticized Pochettino’s substitutions, the manager defended his decisions. It will be interesting to see how both teams adjust their tactics in future matches as they continue their pursuit of success in the Premier League.
