Beale Addresses Controversial Handshake Snub in Response to Viral Video
Late in Sunderland’s 2-1 defeat against Birmingham, manager Michael Beale made the decision to substitute right-back Trai Hume in hopes of salvaging a result. However, what followed was a controversial moment captured on video that quickly went viral. Hume extended his arm for a handshake from Beale as he made his way to the bench, but Beale appeared to ignore him, leaving Sunderland fans displeased.
In response to the alleged snub, Beale addressed the incident and claimed that it was not a deliberate act. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, he explained, “I didn’t see him, to be honest. Trai passed a fitness test to play today and he was on a booking, so it was easier to keep Leo on when we made the change. If I’ve missed him, I’ll have to go and see him now and say that to him. Listen, he is probably as close to me as any other player in the squad. There was nothing there between me and him, I honestly didn’t see him.”
Beale further clarified his stance on Instagram, praising Hume as a fantastic player for the club who gives everything for his teammates and staff. He admitted that he wasn’t aware of missing Hume’s handshake until being asked about it post-game and immediately went to apologize to him. Beale expressed his high regard for Hume as both a man and professional and emphasized that he is an example of everything that is good about a young footballer.
Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, it is important to note that Sunderland’s defeat at St Andrew’s was their 14th loss in the Championship. The Wearside outfit is now facing back-to-back defeats and currently sits tenth in the league. Beale, who took over as Sunderland manager in December, has faced increasing pressure from fans as his team struggles to secure wins. Out of his 12 games in charge, Beale has only won four.
Looking ahead, Sunderland remains four points off the play-offs as they continue to strive for a return to the Premier League. While the handshake snub has certainly caused a stir among fans and in the media, it is crucial to remember that there are larger issues at play for the team. Beale’s ability to guide Sunderland back to success will ultimately determine his future as manager and how the team fares in their pursuit of promotion.
