Aaron Ramsdale’s Euro 2024 Chances at Risk if He Remains Second-Choice at Arsenal
Aaron Ramsdale’s chances of representing the England squad in Euro 2024 could be significantly affected if he continues to be the second-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal for the remainder of the season, warns Gareth Southgate.
Concerns Over Ramsdale’s Position
Ramsdale was recently included in the England squad alongside Jordan Pickford from Everton and Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace. However, he has lost his starting position in both the Premier League and Champions League to David Raya, who joined Arsenal during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta seems to have made his decision, and unless there are changes, Ramsdale is likely to spend more time on the substitutes’ bench. This situation raises concerns about Ramsdale’s chances of making it to the Euro 2024 squad.
Competition for England Goalkeeper Spot
There are other goalkeepers vying for a spot in the England squad, with Newcastle’s Nick Pope being a notable contender. Southgate has already discussed with Ramsdale how his lack of playing time at the club level could impact his international chances.
‘We’re just going to have to see how it is. I had that conversation with him in the last camp,’ said Southgate. ‘He’s still battling to be the No 1 at Arsenal, and his profile and ability to use the ball with his feet are qualities we appreciate and consider important.
‘But as a goalkeeper, there is a reality that if he goes six months without regular playing time by March, I cannot promise things that I cannot guarantee. He understands this and is realistic about it.’
Scholes Backs Ramsdale
Despite the competition and concerns, Ramsdale remains hopeful of reclaiming his position at Arsenal. Manchester United legend Paul Scholes supports Ramsdale and criticizes Raya’s performance since joining the club.
‘I think the goalkeeping situation has raised questions when there was no need for it. I believe Ramsdale has performed very well,’ said Scholes on TNT Sports. ‘Although he may not be as skilled with his feet, Ramsdale is still very capable in that aspect. On the other hand, this keeper [David Raya] has been making mistakes every single week.’

Conclusion
Ramsdale will continue to strive for his place at Arsenal or may consider a move in January. However, it is crucial for his Euro 2024 prospects that he secures regular playing time. With competition from other goalkeepers and Southgate’s concerns, Ramsdale faces a challenging road ahead.
