When Does the Football Season Start? Dates for Premier League and EFL Revealed

Football supporters up and down the country have spent the summer counting down the days until the 2023/24 season gets underway. But thankfully for footy fans, who have actually had to socialise on Saturday afternoons over the past few weeks, the start of the new campaign is just around the corner, with the English football pyramid readying itself to fire back into action in August.

The new season will once again feature tears, trials and tribulations over the course of the ten months – and fans wouldn’t want it any other way. Let’s take a look at the start dates for the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two.

When Does the Premier League Start?

The Premier League 2023/24 season will start on the weekend of Saturday, August 12. The first match of the new campaign on the Friday night will see reigning champions Manchester City make the short trip to face newly promoted Burnley, managed by City legend Vincent Kompany.

Luton kick-start their first-ever Premier League season against Brighton on the south coast, whilst last season’s runners-up Arsenal are at home to Nottingham Forest in the Saturday lunchtime slot. The pick of the weekend’s fixtures is Mauricio Pochettino taking charge of his first Chelsea game with the Blues welcoming Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on the Sunday.
