Mohamed Salah Assists in Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations Warmup Win
Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah showcased his playmaking skills in a warmup match against Tanzania ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite missing a penalty, Salah assisted both goals in Egypt’s 2-0 victory.
Salah’s Penalty Woes Continue
Salah’s penalty record has come under scrutiny recently, as he missed a penalty against Newcastle in Liverpool’s previous match. The debate over whether he should be the Reds’ first-choice taker resurfaced when he failed to convert another penalty against Tanzania.
However, luck was on Salah’s side as the ball rebounded off the goalkeeper’s backside and into the net, resulting in an own goal for Tanzania’s Aishi Manula. This goal put Egypt 2-0 ahead in the match.
Salah’s Influence on the Game
Despite his penalty miss, Salah had a significant impact on the game. He played the full 90 minutes and provided a brilliant first-time assist for Trezeguet’s goal. The assist came from Salah’s quick thinking and accurate left-footed pass over the defense.
Manager Rui Vitoria recognized Salah’s versatility and deployed him in an unusual role in the center of midfield later in the game. Vitoria praised Salah’s ability to play this position, stating that he doesn’t necessarily have to be confined to the wing.
Egypt’s AFCON Campaign
Egypt will begin their group stage matches at the Africa Cup of Nations on January 14 against Mozambique. They are considered favorites to top Group B and advance to at least the last 16. Salah’s involvement in the tournament means he will miss additional games for Liverpool, and if Egypt reaches the final, he may not return until the match against Brentford on February 17.
