Roy Keane slams Erik ten Hag’s claim Anthony Martial was ‘very good’ against Arsenal
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has slammed Erik ten Hag’s claim that Anthony Martial was ‘very good’ against Arsenal. The Frenchman lasted just over an hour at the Emirates as United suffered their second defeat in three matches.
Martial managed a shot on target in the second half but that was his only contribution of note as the striker struggled to get into the game. Rasmus Hojlund, who replaced Martial, proved far more of a handful for Arsenal’s defence during his impressive cameo.
But Ten Hag claimed he was happy with Martial’s performance in an interview with Sky after the game. ‘I think Anthony Martial, a very good performance, so I was pleased,’ said Ten Hag.
However, Keane – who has been a vocal critic of Martial – said the striker ‘didn’t have a kick’. ‘Look at Martial, the manager praised him, I don’t think he had a kick. He didn’t do too much,’ said Keane.
United take on Brighton at Old Trafford after the international break, when Ten Hag will hope to have some players available again. Mason Mount is expected to be fit, while Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are expected to shake off knocks. Raphael Varane could return in October, while Luke Shaw is a long-term absentee.
Roy Keane’s Criticism of Anthony Martial
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has been a vocal critic of Anthony Martial and his performance against Arsenal was no different. After Erik ten Hag praised the Frenchman’s performance, Keane said that he ‘didn’t have a kick’ and ‘didn’t do too much’.
This is not the first time Keane has criticised Martial, with the Irishman previously saying that he needs to ‘start delivering’ for United. Martial has been at the club since 2015 and while he has shown glimpses of his potential, he has yet to consistently deliver for the Red Devils.
United’s Injury Problems
United have been hit by a number of injuries this season, with Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof all expected to be fit for their next game against Brighton. Raphael Varane could also return in October, while Luke Shaw is a long-term absentee.
The injuries have left United short of options in certain areas and it has been difficult for Ten Hag to rotate his squad. This has put extra pressure on the likes of Martial and Hojlund to perform and it will be interesting to see how they respond in the coming weeks.
