Formerly recognised as perhaps the world’s best pure defensive midfielder, Fabinho endured a tough 2022/23 campaign. His physical capacities had declined, and his lack of agility was on show. He was unable to provide the same level of consistency and protection for the back line that he had in previous seasons. As a result, Liverpool struggled to maintain their shape and were often exploited by opponents.
However, Fabinho’s technical ability remained intact, and he was still able to offer defensive nous when the team was defending deep or protecting a lead. His partnership with Gini Wijnaldum had been crucial in previous seasons, but this year Liverpool had nothing. Fabinho was unable to keep up with opponents and was bypassed at will.
The end of the season saw a switch in system which gave Fabinho a new regular partner in Trent Alexander-Arnold. This allowed Fabinho to be more adventurous and surge forward, leaving an extra teammate holding fort without him. However, Fabinho still needs a partner in order to be effective, as he cannot do it alone.
It remains to be seen whether Fabinho can regain his peak form, and whether Liverpool will be ruthless enough to replace him if they receive a big bid. For now, Fabinho will likely remain a regular starter, but it remains to be seen how long he can maintain his form.
