Premier League’s Current Boss Sets New Record for Most Defeats Among Managers
David Moyes, the current boss of West Ham United, made history last Sunday, but not in the way he had hoped. The team’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United marked Moyes’ 239th career loss in the Premier League, making him statistically the manager with the most defeats in the history of the top flight.
Moyes’ recent run of poor performances has seen his team struggle to secure a win. Prior to January, West Ham had been having their best season yet in terms of points. However, they have failed to win any of their seven matches since the start of the new year, raising questions about Moyes’ managerial abilities. To add to the pressure, Moyes’ contract with West Ham is set to expire at the end of the season.
While this unwanted record is certainly unflattering, it also reflects Moyes’ extensive experience in the game. He has managed a total of 682 Premier League matches, boasting a relatively high win ratio of 38.9 percent. This puts him in a similar field to Harry Redknapp, who has a win rate of 36.8 percent and was previously considered the biggest loser among Premier League managers.
Interestingly, even though Moyes and Redknapp may have the highest number of losses, they still outperform current Everton manager Sean Dyche in terms of win percentage. Dyche, who accumulated most of his losses during his time as Burnley manager, has a strike rate of only 28.4 percent. However, his total number of managed games, which stands at 299, prevents him from surpassing Moyes and Redknapp in losses.
Other notable names on the list of managers with the most defeats include Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson, who has accumulated 177 losses throughout his Premier League career, and Sam Allardyce, who sits in third place with 100 losses behind Redknapp.
It is worth noting that while Moyes may have the most losses, he also holds a significant record in terms of the number of matches managed. With the exception of legendary managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, Moyes has managed more games in the Premier League than anyone else. Ferguson, with a remarkable win ratio of 65 percent, does not even make the list, despite managing 810 Premier League games. Wenger, on the other hand, boasts a win percentage of 57.5 percent and led Arsenal to three league titles and seven FA cups.
In comparison to Moyes, other managers like Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley may rank lower in terms of losses, but they have managed significantly fewer matches than him.
While David Moyes may have set an unwanted record, his vast experience in the Premier League cannot be overlooked. Despite his recent struggles, it is clear that Moyes’ managerial career has been filled with highs and lows, making him one of the most experienced figures in English football.
