Toby Alderweireld, a Tottenham icon, has made history by scoring a 94th-minute equaliser for Royal Antwerp against Genk, securing their first Belgian Pro League title since 1957. Alderweireld, who joined his hometown club last summer, fulfilled his promise to help them win the championship. Antwerp needed a win or a draw to secure the trophy, but Genk led 2-1 until the dying minutes of the game. The hosts opened the scoring with Tolu Arokodare shortly before half-time, but Gyrano Kerk equalised for Antwerp on 58 minutes. Bryan Heynen then put Genk back in front in the 75th minute. However, Alderweireld’s stunning shot from outside the area flew into Genk goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt’s top right corner, sparking wild celebrations from Antwerp’s coaching staff and players. Alderweireld left Tottenham in 2021 for Al-Duhail in Saudi Arabia, but he returned to his homeland after just one season. He has now helped Antwerp complete a domestic Double and joins the likes of Kyle Walker, Tanguy Ndombele and Christian Eriksen in winning a league title after leaving Tottenham.
