During a cold night in Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes experienced a helmet malfunction in the third quarter after being hit by Miami Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott.
In the third quarter, with just over seven minutes remaining, Mahomes was tackled by Elliott while attempting to reach the endzone. Upon impact, a portion of the front of Mahomes’ helmet immediately splintered and broke off.

To avoid being forced to leave the game or use a timeout, the referees stopped the clock and allowed Mahomes to switch to a backup helmet for the remainder of the drive. He returned to the field wearing a new helmet on the next drive.

The helmet worn by Mahomes was manufactured by VICIS, a company known for its soft-shell helmets with “local deformation” absorption technology. According to VICIS vice president of product development Jason Neubauer, this technology allows the helmet to absorb impact and deform locally, similar to a modern car bumper, reducing the risk of injury.
Following a penalty, the Chiefs went on to score a field goal, extending their lead to 19-7 in the wild-card game against the Miami Dolphins. With less than nine minutes left to play, the Chiefs are currently leading 26-7.
