FSG Enlists Top Leader to Scout Next Liverpool FC Manager
The search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor as Liverpool manager has begun, and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has enlisted the help of a world-leading American sports executive to find the perfect candidate. Klopp’s decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season was announced recently, but the club’s owners had been informed of this months ago. FSG president Mike Gordon had even tried to convince Klopp to stay, but to no avail.
Now, FSG faces the challenge of appointing a new manager before the start of the new campaign. This task is made more difficult by the absence of a sporting director. Head of research William Spearman and Gordon himself will lead the search, with several early candidates already being considered. These include Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi, Ruben Amorim, Thomas Frank, Ange Postecoglou, and Julian Nagelsmann.
To oversee this process, FSG has brought in Theo Epstein, a former president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs. Epstein has been appointed as a senior advisor for FSG and will provide immediate consultation on finding Klopp’s replacement. He has previous experience with FSG, having worked as vice president and general manager for the Boston Red Sox. Epstein is also a part-owner of FSG and will work closely with Gordon, with whom he has a longstanding relationship.
Notably, Epstein’s role extends beyond Liverpool and encompasses FSG’s entire portfolio, which includes the Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Penguins, RFK Racing, Boston Common Golf, and their recent deal with the PGA Tour. Epstein is highly regarded in his field and was named Fortune magazine’s top leader in 2017.
Sam Kennedy, chief executive officer of FSG, expressed his confidence in Epstein’s abilities, stating, “If our teams and clubs aren’t winning, there’s nothing to talk about. No one knows better how to win than Theo.” Liverpool’s principal owner, John W. Henry, also praised Epstein, acknowledging the impact he had on the Boston Red Sox and expressing his belief that Epstein’s strategic mind and leadership will drive FSG forward.
While an announcement regarding Klopp’s successor is not expected in the near future, FSG is conducting a thorough, data-driven search to ensure they find the right fit. They want to avoid any distractions during a season that could potentially bring four trophies for the club. With Epstein’s expertise and FSG’s commitment to winning, Liverpool fans can be assured that the search for their next manager is in capable hands.
