Naby Keita has signed for Werder Bremen on a free transfer after his five-year stint with Liverpool came to an end. The midfielder signed for the Reds in 2018 from RB Leipzig for £52m but never really hit the heights on a regular basis. He was hampered by injuries and made just 129 appearances across all competitions under Jurgen Klopp, scoring 11 goals. Despite this, Keita does leave Anfield with an impressive CV, having won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup.
Keita is now looking forward to his fresh start in the Bundesliga, signing a three-year deal with Bremen, who finished 13th in the German top flight this season. ‘I’m really looking forward to my new role in Bremen,’ Keita said. ‘The talks with those at the club, the environment and Werder’s tactical plans convinced me. The coach also gave me a good feeling and showed me that I can help the team. The club and the philosophy suit me, it’s the right step for me.’
Clemens Fritz, head of football at Bremen, added: ‘We are very happy that Naby chose us despite several other offers. With his qualities, he will be a great asset to the team.’
James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also leaving Liverpool on free transfers this summer, but they are yet to confirm their next moves. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
