Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal FC, met with the Football Association today (December 7) to discuss his angry outburst over VAR after Arsenal’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle United.

Arteta Charged for Misconduct

The Gunners boss was charged for misconduct by the FA after describing the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s winner as ’embarrassing’ and a ‘disgrace’ as he hit out at English officiating in an explosive rant.

‘It’s embarrassing,’ Arteta said after the match on November 4. ‘It’s a disgrace. That’s what it is. It’s a disgrace. There’s too much at stake. We put in so many hours. I’m here to represent this football club and make my team compete at the highest level. The margins are so small. It’s a disgrace.

‘I don’t want to be in the hands of people. It’s difficult enough to compete against this team – they are a really good team. The way we played, the way we competed.

‘We have to talk about how the hell this goal was allowed to stand. I feel embarrassed. But I have to be the one now to come in here and try to defend the club and please ask for help because it is an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed. An absolute disgrace.

‘I’ve been more than 20 years in this country and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world, I’m sorry.’

Arteta was widely condemned for his remarks about VAR and referees with many pundits slamming the Spaniard.

Club Backs Arteta

But the club publicly backed their manager, putting out an official statement to defend Arteta.

The FA subsequently wrote to both Arteta and Arsenal, and a hearing took place today (December 7), with the Gunners boss being asked to explain himself.

Possible Punishment

Arteta is already set to serve a touchline ban when Arsenal face Aston Villa on Saturday after he was booked for over-celebrating in the win over Luton Town. Depending on the results of the FA hearing, there could be further punishment.
