Arsenal Suffers Blow as Takehiro Tomiyasu Faces Extended Time on the Sidelines
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that defender Takehiro Tomiyasu will be sidelined for an extended period due to a calf injury, dealing a significant blow to the team.
Injury Sustained During Wolves Match
Tomiyasu sustained the injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday. As a result, he was unable to participate in the team’s subsequent match against Luton Town on Tuesday night.
The Gunners managed to secure a 4-3 win against Luton, thanks to a last-minute goal from Declan Rice. This victory has propelled them five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Hopes for a Speedy Recovery Dashed
Initially, there were hopes that Tomiyasu would make a quick recovery, given his recent outstanding performances. However, Arteta confirmed in a press conference after the Luton match that the injury was more severe than anticipated.
Arteta stated, “We had a scan and it’s not good news. He’s got an injury in his calf, and he’s going to be out for a while.”
Defensive Options for Arsenal
Fortunately for Arteta, first-choice right-back Ben White has returned to full fitness and even provided an impressive assist during the Luton match. Additionally, Cedric Soares, who has been out of favor, can also be called upon.
However, with Jurrien Timber still recovering from a long-term injury, Oleksandr Zinchenko is now the only natural left-back option. This forced Arteta to deploy center-back Jakub Kiwior in that position against Luton.
Arsenal’s Upcoming Fixture
Arsenal will face Aston Villa in their next match on Saturday. The team will have to make adjustments to their defensive lineup due to Tomiyasu’s absence.
