Mason Mount Unveiled as Manchester United’s New No7
Manchester United have officially unveiled Mason Mount as their new no7, with the England international signing a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. The club have also confirmed that Mount will take the revered squad number vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo last year, which has also been worn by club legends George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.
The decision to offer Mount the no7 shirt was made early on in talks with the player by United manager Erik ten Hag, sending a clear indication to Mount how much United value the midfielder and signalled the pivotal role he will have in the starting XI next season.
Mount Becomes United’s First Summer Signing
Mount is United’s first summer signing, with ten Hag making his arrival a top priority having admired him since his stint in Netherlands on loan at Vitesse Arnhem. A fee of £55million plus £5m in add-ons was agreed with Chelsea for the 21-year-old midfielder.
Speaking about his move to Old Trafford, Mount said: ‘It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies. Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here. I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.’
Alejandro Garnacho had also been considered for the no7 shirt, speculation which heightened when the Argentina international signed a new long-term deal with the club last month. However, Garnacho showed his support for Mount shortly after the official announcement, liking an Instagram post from United confirming Mount as their new no7.
Mount Ready To Take On His New Challenge
Mount is now ready to take on his new challenge at Old Trafford and will be hoping to emulate some of the greats who have worn the no7 shirt before him. He will be looking to help United challenge for major trophies next season and make a name for himself at one of the biggest clubs in world football.
