Mason Mount Takes Part in First Manchester United Training Session
Mason Mount has taken part in his first training session at Manchester United following his move from Chelsea and shared a joke with former foe Lisandro Martinez. The 24-year-old completed a £60million switch to Old Trafford earlier this week and signed a £250,000-a-week deal until 2028. He was handed United’s iconic No.7 jersey, a shirt worn previously by legends like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Mount – who was not involved with England during their recent summer friendlies – was put through his paces at Carrington for the first time on Friday. The midfielder required surgery on a pelvic injury at the backend of April, with the injury seeing him miss the final seven matches of the Premier League season as well as the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 qualification matches. He showed no ill effects from that lay-off, however, taking a full part in the session and laughing and joking with his team-mates.
Mount Beats Hannibal Mejbri to the Ball
Mount actually clashed with Martinez when Chelsea hosted United at Stamford Bridge last season, with the two players squaring up before Luke Shaw dragged his compatriot away. The two players clearly found plenty of humour in that previous confrontation, posing for pictures together and joking around during Friday’s session. Martinez also missed the run-in with an injury after he fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot during United’s Europa League defeat to Sevilla, but he says he is ‘100% back’ and excited to get back to playing.
Mount, meanwhile, looked eager to impress and got stuck into training, barging Donny van de Beek over at one point and looking sharp as the players took part in a possession-based drill. He also beat Hannibal Mejbri to the ball in one particular drill and practised his shooting in another. Speaking about the importance of getting up to speed quickly, Mount told United’s official website: ‘Pre-season is huge, it gets you in the right shape going into the season. So yeah, the most important thing for me was getting there, being ready on day one and being able to obviously meet all the players, the manager, get working because we’ve got a big season ahead and we want to win trophies, we want to be successful.’
