England and Manchester United Women’s Goalkeeper Mary Earps Wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Mary Earps, the goalkeeper for England and Manchester United women’s team, has been named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. She emerged victorious over other notable athletes such as Stuart Broad, Frankie Dettori, Alfie Hewett, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and Rory McIlroy at the ceremony held in Salford.
Outstanding Performance at the World Cup
Earps showcased her exceptional skills during the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where she played a crucial role in helping England reach the final. Despite Spain’s 1-0 victory, Earps made a remarkable save during the penalty shootout.
Success Beyond the World Cup
In addition to her outstanding performance at the World Cup, Earps achieved success in other tournaments. She emerged as the winner of the Finalissima and Arnold Clark Cup. Furthermore, she reached the FA Cup final with Manchester United.
Accolades and Achievements
The Sports Personality Award is just one of the many individual accolades Earps has received this year. In February, she was honored with The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award for her heroic performance in Euro 2022.
Off-Pitch Advocacy
Beyond her achievements on the field, Earps demonstrated her character by advocating for young fans. She urged Nike to stock her England shirt after an oversight by the sporting giants left fans unable to purchase her no.1 kit. Her efforts were successful, and the green long-sleeved shirt sold out within five minutes after being restocked in December.
