Dwight Yorke Reveals His Two Dream Manchester United Signings

Introduction

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has revealed his two dream signings for the Red Devils and tipped Erik ten Hag to offload three players this summer. Ten Hag has the backing of the United board and the club’s fanbase after an encouraging season which saw the Red Devils win the League Cup and finish third in the Premier League.

Harry Maguire Should Leave

Asked if Maguire – who cost Manchester United £80m in 2019 – should leave the club this summer, Yorke told Match.Center: ‘Absolutely. Any top player – and I’m sure Harry Maguire considers himself a top player as he plays for England whenever the opportunity comes – if he has anything about him, has got to leave the club if they’re not playing. I don’t think sticking around and trying to fight for your place for a whole year and not getting in, and the manager being reluctant to play you even when big players are injured, is worth it. The writing’s on the wall – he needs to do the right thing and move on. It always hurts when you leave a big club like United, but at the end of the day, life is about what’s in front of you, and you’ve got to do the right thing for the good of your career.’

Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial Could Leave

Former Manchester United striker Yorke also believes time is running out for Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial at the Theatre of Dreams. Sancho has underwhelmed following his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, while Martial continues to frustrate at United. ‘I’d be surprised if both of them are still there this time next year,’ Yorke, who was part of United’s 1998-99 treble-winners, added. ‘The problem United have is that they’re on such high wages at the moment, so there’s only a few clubs who could actually afford them. You look at Martial, who has been at the club for nearly eight years, it’s a long time when you think what he’s actually contributed to the team. I know he’s got his injury problems, but when you do the maths, the return on investment doesn’t quite add up, so maybe he needs a fresh start. With Sancho, there’s also still that question mark. I think he might get one more opportunity to prove himself, but these type of players need to do far more. The kind of talent that these boys have and the return they’re offering isn’t matching up – they certainly haven’t lived up to the expectations of being at United, if we’re being honest.’

Manchester United’s Summer Plans

As for incomings, Manchester United hope to complete a deal worth around £55m for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount before turning their attentions to a new goalkeeper and striker. Yorke hopes his former club have bigger plans in mind, however, insisting it would be a ‘no-brainer’ to sign Kylian Mbappe or Harry Kane if the opportunity presented itself. ‘I don’t think Erik ten Hag has much time to try and make up that gap between Manchester United and Manchester City,’ the 51-year-old said. ‘Even though Manchester United have had a decent season, I felt they were still someway short, and until they fill that number 9 spot, that becomes a bit of an issue. I think the uncertainty with the takeover is always going to put in an element of doubt, but if I were to choose, then Kylian Mbappe would be my first choice without question. He’s young, obviously he’s unproven in the Premier League but he’s got class and quality and will be there for the next seven years. In that period, I’m sure he would bring success to United. For me, Mbappe would be a no brainer, but until the question of where the club is going and who will take over from the Glazers is solved, there will be big question marks, because that’s the only way the club would afford him. Harry Kane also fits the bill – if they are trying to get closer to challenging for the Premier League over the next two or three years, then he would be another ideal candidate.’

Conclusion

Dwight Yorke has revealed his two dream signings for Manchester United this summer and tipped Erik ten Hag to offload three players including Harry Maguire. He also believes Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial could leave Old Trafford
