Manchester United Set to Appoint Omar Berrada from Manchester City as New CEO

Manchester United is preparing to make a surprising move by appointing Omar Berrada from local rivals Manchester City as their new chief executive. This decision comes as United looks for a CEO to replace Richard Arnold, who left the club before INEOS purchased a 25% stake.

Berrada, who played a key role in City’s recent success both on and off the field, emerged as the top candidate for United. The club was specifically searching for someone with a proven track record in football and strong business acumen, and Berrada excelled in both areas during his time at City and previously at Barcelona.

In his new role, Berrada will take on executive leadership responsibilities for both football and business operations. He will also join the club’s board of directors and report to United’s new ownership set-up. The decision to appoint Berrada was made jointly by INEOS and the Glazers, highlighting the influence of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s firm, which is awaiting Premier League approval for its investment.

Securing Berrada’s services in a quick and discreet manner is seen as a significant coup for United, especially during a period of major change at the club. Manchester City confirmed Berrada’s departure in a statement to The Athletic, expressing their gratitude and best wishes for his future endeavors.

Currently serving as the chief football operations officer at City Football Group, which owns Manchester City and several other clubs worldwide, Berrada works closely with City’s director of football on transfers and contracts. He was involved in the high-profile signing of Erling Haaland in 2022. Before joining City, Berrada held positions at Barcelona, where he worked for nearly eight years.

Last summer, The Athletic reported that Berrada turned down offers for CEO roles at Premier League clubs, MLS teams, and an NFL franchise. In the meantime, Patrick Stewart has been serving as United’s interim CEO since Arnold’s departure. Stewart, who joined the club in 2006, is United’s chief legal officer and general counsel.

Overall, the appointment of Omar Berrada as Manchester United’s new CEO signifies a significant move for the club and showcases their ambition to strengthen both their football and business operations.
