Luton Town have the chance to make history this month as they prepare to take part in the Championship play-off final. Victory over Coventry City at Wembley will see them return to the Premier League for the first time since the 1991/92 season, when they were relegated from Division One – the last season before the Premier League was founded. The Hatters have had a remarkable journey back to the top flight, having been relegated to the third tier in 2000/01 and then suffering three successive relegations from 2006/07 onwards to end up in the fifth tier National League. They returned to the Football League in 2014/15 and won promotion to the Championship in 2019/20, narrowly avoiding relegation by three points in their first season back before cementing their league status with a 12th place finish the following year. They made the play-offs courtesy of a sixth place finish last season but were they edged out by Huddersfield in the semi-finals. Nathan Jones, who had managed the club between 2016 and 2019 in his first spell in charge before being reappointed in 2020, left for the second time earlier this season to join Southampton. Edwards himself started this season at fierce rivals Watford before being sacked by the Hornets, with the 40-year old being appointed on a three-and-a-half year contract in November 2022. The Championship play-off final will take place on Saturday, May 27 at 4.45pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports. Should the game finish level after 90 minutes, extra-time and if required, penalties, will be used to determine the winner.
