Kepa Arrizabalaga Could be Offered Big Move to Paris Saint-Germain
Paris Saint-Germain are looking to make a big move in the transfer market and have their sights set on Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. New manager Luis Enrique is targeting a new goalkeeper to compete with or replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined from AC Milan in 2021. Kepa is one of three options being considered by the Ligue 1 side, with David De Gea and Hugo Lloris also being eyed up.
Kepa was signed by Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for an enormous £71.6m but has failed to live up to the price tag. He was first choice for his first two seasons in west London but was relegated to back-up to Edouard Mendy over the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns. He did re-emerge as a starter last season, making 39 appearances in all competitions, but his future at Stamford Bridge is not clear, with new manager Mauricio Pochettino likely to want a new, more reliable goalkeeper.
Luis Enrique is familiar with Kepa from working together with the Spain national team and is reportedly keen to take him to Paris. David De Gea is out of contract after leaving Manchester United, so could prove an appealing option if PSG can tempt him to Ligue 1. Hugo Lloris still has a year on his contract at Tottenham, but has expressed his desire to move on this summer, telling Nice-Matin: ‘We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible.’
It remains to be seen whether Kepa will be offered a big move to Paris Saint-Germain or if the club will opt for one of the other two goalkeepers they are considering. However, it is clear that Luis Enrique is looking to put his stamp on the PSG side and is keen to bring in a new goalkeeper who can help them challenge for major honours.
Kepa’s future at Chelsea is uncertain and it could be that a move away from Stamford Bridge is the best option for the 28-year-old. He has failed to live up to his huge price tag since joining the club in 2018 and a fresh start in Paris could be just what he needs to get his career back on track.
Whatever happens, it looks like Paris Saint-Germain are set to make a big move in the transfer market this summer as they look to strengthen their squad and challenge for major honours next season.
