Liverpool’s Victory Over Everton in Women’s Super League Cup
Liverpool played a crucial role in eliminating Everton from the Women’s Super League Cup with a 2-1 victory. However, Liverpool themselves have also been knocked out of the tournament at the group stage.
The match took place on December 13, 2023, at Walton Hall Park. Sophie Roman Haug opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 5th minute, followed by Yana Daniels’ goal in the 56th minute. Toni Duggan managed to score a consolation goal for Everton in the 90+9th minute.
In the WSL Cup format, five teams progress from the group stage as winners, with two additional spots for the best-placed runners-up in the quarter-finals. Chelsea has already secured their place in the last eight due to their participation in the Champions League. Unfortunately, neither Liverpool nor Everton will be joining them.
For Liverpool, this victory was a matter of pride and bragging rights, especially after their 1-0 loss to Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield in October. Despite Liverpool’s exit from the tournament, manager Matt Beard made seven changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Bristol City in the league, including Leanne Kiernan’s first start in 15 months. Kiernan had suffered a serious ankle injury last season and only recently returned as a substitute.
Liverpool’s dominance in set-pieces was evident in this match. Roman Haug’s goal was her third in three consecutive games, while Daniels capitalized on Everton goalkeeper Emily Ramsey’s mistake from a free-kick.
Although Everton managed to score a late goal through Toni Duggan, it was too little too late for both teams. Liverpool’s next challenge is an away game against Manchester United in the Women’s Super League, just a few hours before the men’s fixture at Anfield.
Lineup: Laws; Parry, Clark (Koivisto 81′), Fisk (Bonner 46′), Daniels; Holland (Hobinger 76′), Lundgaard, Kearns; Kiernan, Lawley (Hinds 66′), Haug (Van de Sanden 66′)
Substitutes not used: Micah, Nagano
Liverpool’s upcoming match is against Manchester United on Sunday, December 17, at 12:15 pm (GMT) in the Women’s Super League.
