Liverpool’s interest in Mexican winger Cesar Huerta during the summer transfer window was well-documented, but the deal ultimately fell through. Reports emerged from Mexico at the end of August, stating that Liverpool had shown interest in the 23-year-old left winger playing for Club Universidad, also known as Pumas. It was reported that Pumas had made it easy for Huerta to secure his move to England, with an agreement being very close.
Plans were in place for Huerta to travel to the UK to finalize the transfer, just before the deadline. However, the deal broke down after Sunderland rejected a proposed loan move. Liverpool’s initial plan was to send Huerta out on loan for the season before bringing him back to Anfield next summer.
Pumas president Gustavo Lema confirmed Liverpool’s interest in Huerta during a press conference after a loss to Tigres. Lema expressed pride in having a player scouted by one of the best clubs in the world. He acknowledged that the deal would not have been popular among Pumas fans, as Huerta was their top source of goals last season, scoring 12 and assisting nine in 41 appearances.
The idea of Liverpool signing a 23-year-old from Liga MX and immediately sending him out on loan to the Championship seems strange. Liverpool already has a well-stocked left flank, with players like Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and new signing Federico Chiesa capable of operating in that position. However, Liverpool’s owners seem open to exploring opportunities in the market, as they plan to expand with the purchase of another club, where Huerta could have potentially been sent.
While it seems unlikely that Liverpool will revisit a deal with Pumas for Huerta at this moment, it’s not entirely out of the question. Liverpool’s interest in the Mexican winger showcases their willingness to explore different options and expand their squad.
