Anfield has been a difficult place for Arsenal over the past decade, with the Gunners having lost their last six Premier League games there and only picking up two points in the past 10 years. But this is a new Arsenal – one that is currently at the top of the title race and has answered any questions about their mentality. Ahead of Sunday’s game (kick-off 16:30 BST), BBC Sport takes a look back at some classic encounters between the two sides.
In 2017, Liverpool put on an attacking masterclass against a desperately poor Arsenal side, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all scoring in a 4-0 win. A year earlier, the Gunners had to settle for a 3-3 draw after Joe Allen fired home a 90th-minute leveller. In 2014, Martin Skrtel scored in the 97th minute to salvage a point for the Reds after Fabio Borini had been sent off in injury time.
One of the most memorable games between the two sides was in 2009, when Andrey Arshavin scored four goals to put a significant dent in Liverpool’s title hopes. But perhaps the most dramatic victory came in 1989, when Michael Thomas scored in injury time to give Arsenal a 2-0 win and leapfrog Liverpool to win the league title.
Anfield has been a difficult place for Arsenal over the past decade, but with the Gunners currently at the top of the title race, they will be hoping to draw on some of these classic encounters and come away with a positive result on Sunday.
