Liverpool say they are ‘aware’ of an ‘ongoing situation’ in Colombia after Luis Diaz’s parents were kidnapped in his homeland.
The striker’s parents were taken hostage on Saturday night near to Barrancas. Local reports claimed Diaz’s parents were taken by ‘assailants on motorcycles’.
Diaz’s mother, was found overnight, with Colombian president Gustovo Petro confirming the news on Twitter. However, as of Sunday morning, Diaz’s father was still missing.
Liverpool take on Nottingham Forest at Anfield at 2pm on Sunday afternoon, with Diaz unlikely to participate.
Liverpool’s Statement
The club confirmed on Sunday morning that they were ‘aware’ of the situation involving Diaz’s parents, and that the forward’s welfare was their primary concern.
‘Liverpool Football Club can confirm it is aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia,’ a statement read.
‘It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority.’
More on the Manchester Derby
The Manchester derby is kicking off today at the unusual time of 3.30pm due to the UK government’s coronavirus restrictions. The match will be played behind closed doors, with no fans allowed in the stadium.
The restrictions mean that teams must finish their games by 6pm, so kick off times have been moved back to accommodate this. It is expected that other Premier League games will follow suit in the coming weeks.
