Liverpool have completed their first deal of the summer and it appears that they are looking to add a left-footed centre-back to their squad. This is because left-footed players create better passing angles to retain and progress the ball. Having a left-footed player on the left side of the defence creates angles that make it harder for the opponent to press the ball, giving the receiver more time to control it and make their next move. Additionally, left-footed players can allow the ball to roll across their body, play a one-touch pass out wide, and speed up the play. This makes it harder for the opponent to get close enough to pressure or intercept.
Jurgen Klopp has used Andy Robertson as his left-footed centre-back since switching to a 3-2-5 buildup shape. However, Robertson has been targeted with crosses to the far post due to his height. This has led Liverpool to look for a technically sound, tall centre-back who can combat certain opponents. Potential targets include Levi Colwill (6’2”), Micky van de Ven (6’4”), Josko Gvardiol (6’1”), Goncalo Inacio (6’1”), Nayef Aguerd (6’3”), Jarrad Branthwaite (6’5”), and Marc Guehi (6’0”).
Having the option of a left-footed centre-back will help Liverpool build up more effectively, beat the press, and defend more robustly in the coming season. It appears that Liverpool are taking the opportunity not just to refresh, but also to evolve.
