Luis Suarez Could Join Inter Miami and Follow Lionel Messi to MLS
Inter Miami could be set to make another big name signing with Luis Suarez reportedly willing to buy out his contract at Gremio in order to join Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer. Suarez is the latest in a string of Barcelona legends to join the club co-owned by David Beckham, with Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba already signed up.
ESPN report that Inter Miami have bought an extra spot on their roster for a foreign player, buying the place from San Jose Earthquakes for $150,000 (£117,000). Each MLS team starts with eight spots for foreign players but these can be exchanged between the clubs, as has happened in this situation. That spot could be used for Suarez, with ESPN Brasil reporting that he is keen to leave Gremio for Inter Miami and is even willing to repay the salary he has earned so far in 2023, with some additional payments on top of that.
Suarez only signed for Gremio this year from Uruguayan side Nacional, inking a two-year contract, but already wants to move on. Gremio coach Renato Gaucho admitted the 36-year-old is now a ‘problem’ as he said at a recent press conference: ‘Suarez is now a problem that is in the president’s hands. They are exchanging ideas. As a coach I have to focus on leading the team. It seems like a Mexican soap opera that should end now. Until August 2 I’m quiet, then we’ll see how we continue. Of course we want Suarez to stay. I can’t vouch for him. I know what he thinks and what the club thinks. For now, he has been talking to the board and the president.’
It would be a huge coup for Inter Miami if they could sign Suarez, who has been one of the world’s best strikers for over a decade. He has scored over 400 goals in his career, including 21 in 35 appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League. He also won four La Liga titles and the Champions League during his time at Barcelona, as well as scoring 59 goals in 110 appearances for Uruguay.
If Suarez does join Inter Miami, it will be interesting to see how he fits into the team alongside Messi and the other Barcelona legends. It could be a formidable attack, and one that could help Inter Miami challenge for the MLS Cup this season.
