Liverpool Reportedly Interested in Sunderland Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as Caoimhin Kelleher’s Replacement
Liverpool is said to be monitoring Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as they anticipate the departure of Caoimhin Kelleher from Anfield this summer. Kelleher has been a reliable backup to Alisson Becker during his time at Liverpool, helping the team secure victories in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in 2022. However, rumors suggest that the 25-year-old may leave the club at the end of the season, with Celtic showing strong interest in signing him.
Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Celtic, is reportedly a fan of Kelleher and is in search of a new goalkeeper, with Joe Hart nearing the end of his career. Liverpool is said to be demanding £20 million for Kelleher, whose contract expires in 2026. This season, Kelleher has conceded 14 goals in 11 games and has kept only two clean sheets.
In case Kelleher does leave, Liverpool has a contingency plan in place, with Anthony Patterson catching their attention. The 23-year-old has established himself as Sunderland’s number one goalkeeper, playing a crucial role in their promotion from League One and their run to the Championship play-offs last season. Patterson has conceded 30 goals and kept eight clean sheets in 27 league games this season. He recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at Sunderland until 2028.
The potential transfer of Patterson will depend on whether Liverpool allows Kelleher to leave. If Sunderland is willing to part ways with their talented goalkeeper, negotiations will determine the price. Liverpool’s interest in Patterson highlights their commitment to securing a capable replacement for Kelleher.
